God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”
— Hebrews 6:10
Life is a long journey, often filled with uncertainties and challenges. As we travel down this road, our strength inevitably wanes. Like any wise planner, we must keep the end in sight from the very beginning. The unpredictability of life makes planning difficult, yet it is essential to prepare for the worst even as we hope for the best.
Consider the example of animals that hibernate. They spend the warmer months gathering and storing food, fully aware that they won’t be able to hunt during the harsh winter. Those who fail to prepare properly risk starvation or are forced to brave severe conditions in search of sustenance. Their survival depends on foresight and prudent preparation.
In much the same way, life moves through seasons, sunshine and storms, calm and turbulence. With each passing year, just like the changing weather, our strength diminishes. The vibrant days of youth give way to the quieter, more fragile seasons of later life. This is why it is vital to ‘make hay while the sun shines.’
When we first enter the world, our parents care for us, and little is expected in return. As we grow, leave school, and begin working, we start to build families and lay down legacies. Eventually, the sun begins to set on our years, and we find ourselves reflecting on the life we have lived and the legacy we will leave behind.
The Bible reminds us:
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16
When the sun sets on our working years, it’s a time to look back and also to prepare for the days ahead. We must not live foolishly but use our time wisely, ensuring we will not be caught unprepared when our strength fails.
There will come a time when our energy and ability to work as we once did will fade. This is when the life we have built, the resources we have stored, and the wisdom we have gained will carry us through.
Joseph’s story in Egypt is a powerful example. During years of plenty, he stored grain to sustain the people through the famine years and even had enough to trade with other nations (Genesis 47). His foresight ensured survival and provision in difficult times.
Likewise, as we journey through life, we must plan carefully, saving and investing wisely for the years when we can no longer work as before. Every day is an opportunity to prepare for that time.
But beyond practical preparation, as Christians, we are called to pray earnestly for our later years. We need God’s wisdom to invest in what truly matters not only financially but spiritually and emotionally.
We pray not to live as fools but as the wise, confident that when the strength fades, we will not be found wanting. Through prayer and wise stewardship, we can embrace our retirement years with peace and dignity, knowing we have laid a strong foundation for the sunset of our lives.
