Verse – Luke 11:27-28

As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

Reflection – Luke 11:27-28 – The Truly Blessed

Jesus immediately replied to the woman because he didn’t want those gathered around him to miss his message. Here was a man who cast out demons and spoke words of encouragement and redemption always.

Jesus inspired people to sit and listen to his parables and wise words. He performed miracles and broke people out of chains and bondage. You can imagine how adored and respected he was by these people.

The woman was a huge fan of Jesus and wanted to say a big thank you to the woman who brought Jesus forth from the womb. Her appreciation of Christ was of the flesh. She was just grateful that she could hear and touch Christ because he was so great. She couldn’t believe that she lived in such a time when the real-life Messiah was right in front of her eyes. Her praise for Jesus’ mother was warranted.

However, Christ was teaching the people about kingdom life. He was the son of the Most High God sent from heaven to save mankind. He already knew the beauty and awesomeness of God’s kingdom. He wanted so much for those he was teaching to focus on getting there too.

He, therefore, explained to the woman that those who are actually blessed will be those who end up inheriting the kingdom of heaven. The only way to do that was to ‘hear God’s word and obey it.’

Imagine seeing the most beautiful place on earth and then coming back home to inform your family about it.

However, their focus only seems to be on how lucky they are that you are with them. You would want them to focus on getting to that beautiful place with you because you know that nothing could ever come close to it. That is what Christ wants for us all; to be with him in paradise where his father has prepared for those who accept him.
