How To Use Psalm 91 As A prayer

Psalm 91

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, “The LORD is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Psalm 91
Psalm 91

This Psalm speaks of how a good father relates to a good child. The child that always obeys and follows the path set by their father receives many blessings from them.

Cubs, chicks, and other offspring of animals tend to live longer if they stay under the guidance and protection of their parent.

Those who wander from their herd tend to be devoured, starved to death, or completely lost. If they find themselves in a different herd, they are suddenly not recognized as part of that family. They are then exposed to many risks that can destroy them.

The Psalmist speaks of all the benefits that come with staying under the guidance and protection of God. As a child of God, you must always be in his company if you wish to enjoy the benefits a child of God enjoys.

In this mysterious world, there are many kingdoms of humans that get their guidance and protection from other sources. Just as in the animal kingdom, you must be careful not to be mixed up with a different family.

Your family is that of God and his son Jesus Christ through whom we have been reconciled unto Him. There are herds and groups of humans that will not recognize you as a part of them if you wander into their homes. They may see you as a predator or prey.

When a child walks with their parent in the dark, they must have complete trust and faith in them that they know the best routes to take and the worst routes to avoid even though visibility is low.

In the same way, you must completely put your trust in the Lord so you don’t find yourself hitting obstacles in the dark or falling prey to hunters. This is what David enjoyed in the Lord.

As long as he stayed close to the Lord, he didn’t fear any negative circumstances that were around him. Even when thousands fell around him, he was positive that nothing would cause him to fall.

It is this level of faith that you must reach as a Christian. As long as you rely on the Lord and keep his commandments, He will never let you fall or become prey to another demonic family or herd.

Find a quiet and peaceful place:

Just as the psalm suggests, find a “secret place” where you can be alone and undisturbed. This can be your personal sanctuary, a quiet room in your home, or even a peaceful outdoor spot. Creating an atmosphere of tranquility and serenity will help you connect with the sacredness of the psalm.

Read and meditate on the words:

Begin by reading Psalm 91 slowly and attentively, allowing each word to sink in. Reflect on the meaning behind the verses and the promises they hold. Consider how these words resonate with your current situation and any challenges you might be facing. Allow the psalm to become a dialogue between you and the Divine.

Visualize the imagery:

As you read and meditate on the psalm, take the time to envision the powerful metaphors and imagery it presents. Imagine yourself dwelling in the secret place of the Most High, under the protective shadow of the Almighty. Visualize His wings covering you, providing a safe refuge. This visualization will help you internalize the comforting and protective aspects of the prayer.

Personalize the prayer:

As you make this psalm your prayer, personalize the wording to reflect your own situation and needs. For example, instead of saying “He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler,” say “Deliver me from the snare of [specific challenge or fear].” By personalizing the prayer, you make it more intimate and relevant to your own life.

Lift up your concerns:

After internalizing the psalm’s promises and personalizing your prayer, it’s time to present your concerns to the Almighty. Share with God your worries, fears, and struggles, trusting in His ability to provide solace, protection, and guidance. Remember, the psalm doesn’t promise that we will be exempt from challenges, but it assures us that God will be with us through them all.

Express gratitude and faith:

Conclude your prayer with words of gratitude for the protection, love, and comfort God provides. Express faith in His ability to fulfill His promises as stated in the psalm. By expressing gratitude and faith, you are opening yourself to receive the blessings of divine intervention and assistance.

Continue to dwell in the secret place:

Let Psalm 91 become a guiding light in your life. Embrace the practice of dwelling in the secret place of the Most High daily, seeking refuge and finding strength in God’s presence. Use this psalm not only as a prayer during times of difficulty but also as a reminder of the continuous protection and support available to you.
