“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[a] and said, ‘For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Matthew 19:4-6.
Man and woman were made by God for the purpose of a partnership. He knew that it would be impossible for either of them to exist alone without each other. This is why he made a partner for Adam.
Having a partner means not having to go through life by yourself. When you walk on a scary and long road alone, you might get to a point where you need some help in the form of strength or motivation. Singularly you will not be able to withstand the pressures of life by yourself.
When two people are doing something together it is far easier for one to see whenever the other is deviating from the agreed path because they always look out for each other. God knew that life would not be easy for man, this is why he made him a partner and a helper from his ribs.
The implication of this is that a rib helps protect the heart and other vital organs in the body. Making a woman out of a man’s body meant a partner who would be after the man’s wellbeing and protection.
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Ecclesiastes 4:12
Finding the right partner in life can be a challenging experience. If you do not know what to look out for or how to begin just think about God’s intentions for making a partner for Adam.
He wanted someone to make Adam feel loved and not alone. He wanted someone who would help Adam and love him unconditionally. Eve did not have any previous engagement with Adam but began to love and care for him immediately. This is the love we must look for in a partner.
God first loved you and therefore gave His son to save you from death. You did nothing to deserve this unconditional affection. When looking for a partner in life, find someone who loves you for who you are. Christ died for you when you did not deserve it and that is the ultimate demonstration of love.
A partner is one who simply wants to be there for you no matter what. It doesn’t matter whether you have a disagreement or not, they just want to be your helper and make sure that you are not struggling. Look out for people with traits like that towards you and you will soon find a partner for you. Let us take a look at what to do when trying to find someone for you.
6 tips to find the right partner in life
Do not depend on your own understanding
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight
(Proverbs 3: 5-6)
In a physical world, it is very easy to be attracted to things that everyone else is attracted to when choosing a partner in life. It is however very important not to lean on your own understanding but rather pray to God to open your eyes so you find the right person for you.
Your understanding is always limited to beauty and aesthetic qualities but the Lord searches the heart of people and knows them for who they really are. With God, there is no pretense and he knows people inside out.
Let God lead you always and ask Him to show you the right partner for you. There is a reason He put Adam to sleep before making Eve so that Adam wouldn’t ask for a partner according to his own understanding.
Look out for spiritual qualities and not physical qualities
For who knows a person’s thoughts except for their own spirit within them? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. (1 Corinthians 2:11).
If you want to know a person’s true thoughts, know their spirits. The spirit of a person determines who that person is. People exhibit what they want others to think about them physically but their spiritual characteristics expose them for who they truly are inside. A person’s spirit exposes any pretense.
Look for a spiritually strong person, someone who is never broken. Look for someone who has the Spirit of God inside them. The Holy Spirit inwardly directs the paths of the righteous and mimics the traits of God in his people.
Look for people who are not swayed by the ways of the world but rather who are led by the spirit in all decisions they make. People like that do not buckle under pressure but trust in God no matter what the physical world may be telling them.
How does the person respond in disappointing times?
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
(Proverbs 31:25)
The noble wife is described in this scripture as one with dignity and strength. This can be said for any noble partner. Find someone who will not be afraid of dark days. Your partner must be clothed in strength and resilience no matter what.
When there are stormy winds, a good partner musters courage and protects all that they care about. They do not lose hope and faith but they become a pillar of strength for all those they love to lean on.
Find a partner who will give you courage and strength when everyone is against you. Find a partner who will help you achieve your goals no matter how stacked the odds are against you. Christ is your perfect example of what to look for in a partner because he is always your friend and will not desert you no matter what.
Look for a friend in a room full of enemies
One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
(Proverbs 18:24).
The word friend is often used loosely. A friend isn’t only there when things are going well for you and everyone likes you. A friend sticks to you when everyone is against you. Find someone who draws closer to you even when everyone is walking out on you. Those are the true friends and the right partners.
There are those who will tell you when others are plotting against you or try to save you from your own doom. A person who tries to please you by lying to you isn’t a good partner for you, but one who stops at nothing to ensure that your future will be safe from harm is the right partner.
Find a good friend who will be with you at your lowest and the worst of times. They are the ones who will still remain even when you lose everything in the future.
