Feeling Stressed? This Prayer Should Help

I know that for some people, it might sound unusual to pray about something like being stressed. But for me, prayer is the natural response to everything.

Even the things that might seem too small, too trivial, or not worth mentioning, I pray about them. Because of that, I am always praying. Whether I am working, doing chores, on the bus, or running errands, my heart is in constant conversation with God.

The stuff I would normally worry about? I’d rather pray over it. Why? I’m a deep thinker, and when I let my mind run wild on things I can’t control, it just spirals into stress. I’ve learned that the more I hand over my worries to God, the lighter my heart feels.

Stress often comes from overthinking. The more you dwell on things that are beyond your control, the heavier the burden becomes, and worry creeps in. The solution I discovered early in life was to replace anxious thoughts with prayer.

Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

I remember being very young, no older than six, when I became ill. My aunt, with whom I was staying, took me to the hospital. The doctor asked if I tended to think too much. At such a young age, when most children are carefree, I was often lost in thought.

The doctor advised my aunt to watch me closely and to prompt me whenever she noticed I was drifting into my thoughts.

You might wonder what a six-year-old could think about so deeply that it would affect her health. That story is for another day, but it explains why I learned early to pray instead of letting worry control me.

And one thing I’ve discovered? Prayer works. Maybe not always the way you would expect, but it works. It calms your heart, gives you peace, and reminds you that even when you feel powerless, someone far greater is in control of your life. Someone who truly cares about every detail of your day.

Psalm 55:22 encourages us to cast our burdens on the Lord, and he will sustain us; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Even as a child, I learned that surrendering my thoughts to God shifted the weight off my shoulders.

When stress feels overwhelming, prayer becomes an anchor. Prayer is not just talking to God, it is a way to rest in Him, to align our hearts with His truth, and to let His peace settle where worry once lived.

So if you ever find yourself overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed, take a moment to pause. Close your eyes, breathe, and lift your heart to the Lord. The big things, the small things, the things beyond your control, bring them all to Him.

Matthew 11:28-30 reminds us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Here is a prayer you can use, or let it inspire your own conversation with God:

A Prayer For Stress

Loving Father,
I thank You for my life and all that You do for me. I thank You for Your constant presence and for the promise that You will never leave me nor forsake me. I thank You for the comfort Your Word brings and for the peace that comes when I cast my worries onto You.

Please forgive me for the times I allow worry and stress to take control. Forgive me for the nights I lie awake, turning over situations I cannot change, and for the burdens I carry alone instead of giving them to You.

Father, today I surrender all my stress and anxiety to You. I lay my burdens at Your feet and ask You to teach me not to carry what I cannot control. Help me to lift my eyes to You and trust Your plan above my understanding. Fill my heart with Your peace, guide my steps, and grant me wisdom to navigate the challenges before me.

Help me to take one day at a time, to face each moment with calm and confidence, and to rely on Your strength rather than my own. Let Your presence remind me that no matter how overwhelming life feels, I am never alone, and You are always in control.

Thank You, Lord, for listening to my prayer. Thank You for Your patience, love, and unending grace. Strengthen my faith so that even in stressful moments, I can find rest in You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Prayer is not just an action; it is a lifeline. When we make prayer our first response instead of worry, we invite God’s peace, wisdom, and perspective into our daily struggles.

Stress is inevitable, but prayer transforms it, turning moments of anxiety into opportunities for intimacy with God. Let prayer become your habit, your refuge, and your source of strength, and watch how it changes the way you face life’s challenges.
