How do you start your day?
For some people, the first thing they do when they wake up is to check their phone. They check their emails, text messages, or social media. For others, the first thing they do is stretch and grab a cup of coffee. And for some parents, the first thing they do when they wake up in the morning is to check on their children.
Not that any of these is bad, they are all ways to start your day. But if you want to start your day right, then start your day with God. It’s only a day, yes, but starting it with God can make all the difference in your day.
A day entails a lot and the only way to be prepared for whatever the day will bring is to start your day with God.
Growing up, one thing I always saw my mom do every morning was that, she started her day with God.
If my mom woke up from her sleep because someone came to knock at her door, she will look through the window to see who it is and go and have her time with God before she will go and look for the neighbour who came knocking to ask them why they stopped by.
If she woke up because her phone was ringing, she would ignore the phone call and have her time with God before she calls back the person.
Because I knew how much it was important for her to start her day with God, I didn’t bother her in the morning until she was done with her quiet time with God.
On days when there was an urgent thing to attend to, she will make sure she takes at least a minute to start her day with God.
Why should you start your day with God?
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,
Matthew 6:33
And all these things shall be added to you.
She did this every day and when I asked her why it was so important for her to do that first before anything else, she said so that she can be at peace.
For me, I didn’t see the big deal for making it the very first thing every morning. I just thought what mattered was that you at least find some time to do it in the day and it didn’t necessarily have to be the very first thing.
She explained to me that, it was important to give thanks to God, first thing in the morning and it was important to dedicate your day to Him and seek His guidance for the day.
This was because when we lean on our own abilities and thoughts, we make mistakes but when we seek the strength of God and His guidance for the day, He directs our path and our decisions and we have a good day.
Even if things go bad for you that day, He grants you inner peace and a calm mind to do what you need to do. He gives you the strength to pull through the toughest of days. So it is very important to start your day with Him, no matter what.
So, how do you start your day with God?
Start with a thank you
Really, the first thing you should do immediately you wake up is to say “Thank you, God”. You don’t have to say much. You don’t need to say a lot. Just a simple thank you.
Most people underestimate the ability to wake up every morning. Just the fact that you are alive and you slept through the night and you are able to wake up in the morning, should be enough to say, thank you to God.
Recite a Bible verse
The next thing to do is to recite a Bible verse. You can say it out loud if you are sleeping alone but if there is someone sleeping who you do not want to disturb, then just recite it to yourself.
It will be great to have a particular verse to start your day with but if you don’t, you can use a verse of the day app. And recite that verse, first thing in the morning.
Below are some Bible verses to start your day with. You can memorize your favorite verse and say it every morning immediately you wake up.
