Q. Dr. Pike, thank you for joining us today. Could we start by having you share with us a little bit about your background and what led you to focus on menopause in your practice?

A. Thank you for having me! Initially, I started by developing an interest in how women should get their healthcare needs met while I was in the beginning phase of my health career. As my career progressed, I noticed that there was a lack in the amount of resources and support that women need during menopause.

Realizing this helped me understand what I wanted to do, and I, therefore, dedicated my practice to providing care, knowledge, education, and other resources for women who are going through menopause.

Q. What are some common misconceptions that you have noticed come up in interactions with your patients, and how do you address them?

A. One very common misconception that I have noticed is that people think menopause is only about hot flashes and mood swings and these are the only symptoms women face during this phase, but that is not true, as menopause as a phase entails many other symptoms such as physical, emotional and other hormonal changes. Another pretty common misconception is that menopause is an indicator of the end of a woman’s fertility or sexuality.

Again, this is also not the case. I address these misconceptions by providing my patients with evidence-based information, and I help them understand and embrace this phase with confidence!

Q. For women experiencing menopause symptoms, what lifestyle changes do you recommend to help prevent discomfort and promote overall well-being?

A. Lifestyle changes during menopause are absolutely crucial to prevent stress and promote overall well-being! Exercise regularly helps combat hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, etc. Also, make sure you’re eating a balanced diet that is full of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

Learn some stress management techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness, and meditation, and put them into regular practice to help manage stress. And, of course, getting enough sleep and staying hydrated is also critical to good well-being during menopause.

Q. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment option that is kind of controversial. What is your opinion on it, and how do you approach this topic with your patients?

A. Hormone replacement therapy can be a very effective form of treatment to help reduce menopause symptoms, such as severe discomfort and complications. However, it does not apply to everyone as it might not work for everyone. So, if you do want to give it a try,

I would suggest working with your healthcare provider, as it will help you understand your preferences and the risks associated with the process. I always discuss the pros and cons of HRT with my patients, making sure they have the information they need to make an informed and conscious decision!

Q. Many women feel isolated or lonely when they discuss menopause because of the existing social stigma and also the lack of awareness. How can we foster a safe environment for women going through this transitional phase?

A. Being open about menopause requires being educated about the matter, awareness, and destigmatizing it. Healthcare providers play a very important role in doing all of this, including creating a safe and supportive environment for women going through menopause and seeking help.

Other resources like SimplyMenopause.net and other awareness campaigns can help challenge misconceptions and provide women with the help and support that they need.
