Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.

Mark 11:23

When you sit down and think about how powerful words can be, you wonder why christians do not use it more to their benefit.

The spoken word(Rhema) cannot be taken back. When you offend someone with words, it doesn’t matter how many times you apologise and are forgiven, the words cannot be forgotten. This gives us an example of how permanent and powerful spoken word can be.

How does the Bible see words?

Well, to start with- Genesis Chapter 1 illustrates how the world was created. We can see that things and animals were created with the words of God. By simply saying “Let there be”, there was.

Genesis 1:27 tells us that humans are the only creations in the image of God. What does this tell you?

Well, it tells me that the world or universe around me was spoken into being by God who made me in His own image. This means that , I can also create and manipulate things around me with just my words. What words will those be though?

Effects of bad words

With his mouth, the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge, the righteous are delivered. Proverbs 11:9

With his mouth, the godless man would destroy his neighbor,
but by knowledge, the righteous are delivered.

Proverbs 11:9

Everything we say has an effect. That is why we should be mindful of the words we speak. Words are cheap, you can afford to say whatever you want to say. But what happens after you speak these words?

How does your words make others feel? The things you say to someone can ruin their day, even their whole life. Words are very powerful and bad words are just as equally powerful.

Bad words can destroy relationships and ruin marriages. Bad words can discourage, condemn, misinform or even tear down people. And as Christians, our words carry extra power. So it is very important to be mindful of our words. (James 1:26)

Effects of kind words

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. Proverbs 15:1,4

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Proverbs 15:1,4

Just as bad words can hurt people, kind words can make people feel better. Saying the right thing to someone can make them feel great. From the Bible quote above, we can see that even if someone is angry, saying the right thing to them can turn away their anger.

The verse 4 says that a gentle tongue is a tree of life. This means that saying the right thing to someone, not only makes them feel better but can actually give them life.

So you have to be mindful of the things you say to others. You have to make sure your spoken words give life to others and not tear them down.

Things words can do for Christians

Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.

Mark 11:23

This tells us of what Jesus Christ taught us about the power of words as long as we believed in what we said and didn’t doubt.

For with the heart, one believes and is justified, and with the mouth, one confesses and is saved. Romans 10:10

For with the heart, one believes and is justified, and with the mouth, one confesses and is saved.

Romans 10:10

This reveals how salvation is made sure through confession.

Words can do a lot of things for us, that is why James 1:26 talks about how a christian’s words should be more controlled. So how then, will you use your tongue as a christian?

How to use your words as a Christian

The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook. Proverbs 18:4

The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters;
the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.

Proverbs 18:4

There are two ways we use our words. These are the words we say to others and the words we say to ourselves.

As a christian, you have to make sure that the words you say to others, are the right words. You have to ensure that your words are not causing harm to others. You have to make sure that your words aren’t making people feel sad and bad about their life.

You have to make sure that the words you say to people encourage and comfort them. You have to ensure that your words give life to others and give them a reason to smile.
