Reflection – Romans 4:1-3 – Works Alone Cannot Save
It sounds very simple so unbelievers do not buy it. They feel like it is too trivial and simplistic for faith to save a soul from eternal damnation. The flesh is used to living by rules.
Rules like eating and drinking water periodically so one does not faint or be dehydrated. Rules like do not physically harm another person or you will be arrested and put in prison. If you follow these simple rules, you will be saved from physical danger or imprisonment.
In fact, there was a time when God dealt with his people with the rules of the flesh. He commanded them not to steal, kill, covet, or serve other gods. He also commanded them to honor their parents and follow certain physical rules that were for their own good.
At a certain point though God decided to impart his righteousness on us. Abraham walked with God and obeyed him even to the point of sacrificing his beloved Isaac. These works did not make Abraham righteous in the eyes of God but it was rather freely imparted into his spirit.
Only the spirit of God is righteous. That spirit of righteousness is imparted into yours when you have faith in what Christ did for you. No amount of work can attain righteousness. If it were to be so, Christ’s death would’ve meant nothing. Thank the Lord for his mercies and goodness upon your life today.
