Verse – Matthew 21:42-44

Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes. “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

Reflection – Matthew 21:42-44 – Bear Fruit

Abraham was the second Adam in many people’s eyes. This is because when Adam disobeyed God and allowed himself to be deceived by the devil, God regretted making man. When Abraham found favor in the eyes of God, He tested him by giving him his heart’s desire and then asking him to sacrifice it back to him.

When God realized that Abraham was willing to do this even though he was in pain, God realized that Abraham truly believed in him. At that moment God decided to give man another chance through Abraham and his descendants; the Jews.

The Jews disappointed God numerous times even after he saved them from slavery and fed them with water and food throughout their journey in the desert. No matter how God tried to cleanse them of all sin and use them to draw the rest of mankind to him, they still did evil in his sight. He even wrote his commandments on stones for them but they still found ways to disobey him.

He saved them countless times from their enemies and performed various miracles for them but they still eventually did evil in his sight. God finally had to make the sacrifice Abraham almost made to him to prove his love by giving his only begotten son through Mary as a sacrifice to bridge the gap between him and mankind.

Christ in this verse warns the Jews of this plan. He tells them that if they do not resist the evil they do and start bearing the fruits God intended for them to do, they would be destroyed. The Jews failed the original mission God gave them.

The Jews only saw themselves as the true children of God. However, Christ was warning them here that God was only interested in those who would bear fruit for him and not those who claimed to relate to him through Abraham. As a Christian today, you must bear fruit for God so you are not left out of his kingdom.
