How To Raise A Prayerful Child

6 tips to raise a prayerful child

As a parent, one thing you always make sure to do is to pray for your children. You pray over them when they are going to sleep, you pray over them when they are sick, you pray over them every time.

This is because you know you can’t always be around to protect your child, so you pray over them for someone who can always be with them to guide and protect them for you all the time.

Praying over your child is very important but it is also very important to teach your child to pray on their own.

If you only pray for children when you are praying but you don’t involve them or teach them to pray, they will be covered by your prayers alright, but what happens when they face something and you are not around?

So it is important that you teach your child to pray.

Benefits of teaching a child to pray

  • Children who pray become adults who pray
  • It builds their faith in God
  • It strengthens their relationship with God
  • They learn to be calm and trust in God when times get hard
  • They seek God’s guidance in everything they do.
  • It helps them to be compassionate

Pray out loud around your kids

Most people are more comfortable when they pray alone and by themselves. So they mostly wait until they are alone to pray. And if they are around people, they just say a silent prayer when they need to pray.

God hears all prayers, whether you pray silently or you pray out loud. But if you are trying to raise prayerful children, then it is important that you let them see and hear you pray.

Children practice what they see. So if they see and hear you praying all the time, they will start doing it too even if they are too young to understand what they are doing.

Pray consistently

If you are trying to raise a child that prays, then it is important that you are a parent that prays too.

So pray consistently. Pray every day. Pray about everything. If prayer is something you only do once in a while, it will be very difficult to convince your children that they need prayers.

They watch you. They see what you do or don’t do even if you think they don’t pay attention to you.

So if you don’t pray regularly, you can’t convince them to pray too. Because why should they do it when you never do?

So you don’t have to wait until something goes wrong in your life to pray, pray continually. Pray all the time and your children will learn that from you.

Have a family devotion

Having your personal devotion and quiet time every day is a good thing. But it is important that you also set aside time to have a family devotion that includes your kids.

This will help your kids to learn more about God and why they pray to him. It will be easier for them to pray always when they understand why they pray and who they are praying to.

So family devotion time will help them to read and understand the bible and also develop a personal relationship with God.

It will also teach them to pray based on scripture.

Teach them to pray

Prayer might sound like an easy thing to do, you just close your eyes and speak to God. But in reality, it is not always that easy to pray.

Sometimes, you know that you have to pray but you just don’t know what to say. So it is very important that you teach your children how to pray.

You can teach them a morning prayer, a bedtime prayer, a prayer to say before meals, and a prayer to say when they feel scared. They don’t have to be long prayers. Something short and simple for kids.

Teaching them to say these prayers will ensure that your children pray every day.

Get them a prayer journal

When your child gets to the age where they can read and write, get them a prayer journal to use daily.

This will help them to keep records of what prayer requests they may have and how prayer is affecting their life.

Keeping a prayer journal can help your children build their faith and relationship with God.

It will also help you to know what prayer requests they might have so you pray with them.

Start now

One mistake parents sometimes make is that they wait too long to involve their children in prayer time.

And when the kids are older, they suddenly expect them to be prayer warriors.

If you want a prayerful child, then start now. It doesn’t matter how young your children are, involve them.

The bibles says in Proverbs 22:6 that “train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it”.

So if you want your child to develop a praying habit, then it is important that you start now.

I have believed in Good for as long as I can remember. However, in 2018, I had a particularly tough time. We lost our last baby boy as a still born one month after my oldest son went to prison for 30 years. I also believe that I was under spiritual attack as well based on specific things that happened during that time. Because of all those factors, I stopped anything faith related. I went from a Bible reading, prayer writing, Jesus loving momma to our 4 yo, to nothing. I didn’t even SAY God. It wasn’t exactly a conscious thing, but regardless, all the time I was struggling, I wasn’t teaching or son. He’s just turned 7 and I’m working to make myself right with God again. Have I got time to make up for three missed opportunities with him? And could you recommend a particular study for both teaching him about Jesus and helping me rebuild my faith?

Hello Beth, It’s never too late to find your way back to God and it’s not too late to start teaching your son about God. Life is full of ups and downs and sometimes when the going gets tough, it makes our faith waver. But you can always rejoice in the knowledge that God is always with you and when you call on Him, He will hear you. Psalm 50:15
